Flu Shots Coming To John Hay!

Protect yourself, your child, and your community from the flu! Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be providing flu shots at John Hay on October 29, 2019 from 12:45-2:25 PM.  Students (ages 4 and older), staff and community members can get the flu shot. All SPS insurance is accepted. Most forms of insurance (including Apple Health and Medicaid) and cash or check ($40) are accepted. The consent form needs to be completely filled out. Families who have no insurance can write “No insurance” and the student can still get a flu shot. All SPS insurance is accepted. A thimerosal-free vaccine is available for pregnant women. The double dose version recommended for adults over age 65 is not available. Forms and additional information available here: Flu information  or School Nurse Kimberly Chin at or 206-252-2107.

    Picture Day

Picture Day will be Monday, Oct. 7th.  Hard copy photo order forms will go home next week.  If you write a check, your student will need to bring the order form back on Picture Day (not beforehand) to give to the photographer.  Photos can also be ordered online with a credit card by going to and entering Picture Day ID: LS119060Q0.  If you do not order photos, you will still receive an all-class photo and a proof of the individual photo (with instructions on how to order, if you’d would like).

If your child is absent on Picture Day, Retake Day will be Tuesday, Nov. 12th.

    Safety on Hay Way

Here's a friendly reminder on how Hay Way works. Hay Way is our way to help with drop off and pick up for your student(s) at John Hay while remaining in your car and avoiding minimal parking.

Drop-off occurs in front of the school on Garfield St., heading EAST only. Please wait to let your student out of the car until you reach the pull-in area after the school entrance where the patrols are. They will open the passenger curb-side door for students to get out.

Pick-up runs very similar to drop-off. Please head EAST on Garfield St. to the pull-in area, after the school entrance, where the patrols are. Patrols will open your vehicle door when your student is there to let them in. If your child is not outside when you pull up, we may ask you to please circle around the block to help us keep the line moving.

To keep Hay Way safe, we ask that you please do not u-turn at 3rd Avenue N. There is a crosswalk there that is frequently used to cross students. Also, in the afternoon, the pick-up line can be long, and to keep it running as smoothly as possible, we don't allow cars to enter the line from 3rd Avenue N. Please be patient as the patrol crew works hard to keep things going smoothly and safely!

Lastly, students may not be dropped off or picked up in or near the bus zone on Galer St. We ask this to help keep students safe and to help the bus drivers operate their buses safely.

Thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions please email

Reminder!  Registration opens Saturday (Sept 21) at 7am!!!

Advanced Learning Referral Information --- Closing on Monday!

Now through September 23, 2019, you can refer your child on the Source to be considered for Advanced Learning.

If you are new to John Hay or new to volunteering, there will be two volunteer trainings held (you only need to attend one).  We will go over policies and procedures to get you familiar with the school.  Volunteer trainings will be held on Thursday, September 19th and Tuesday, Sept. 24th at 8am.  Meet in the main lobby.

If you are a new volunteer, you will need to complete the following:

    1. SPS Volunteer Application (this is the background check form) and upload photo ID
    2. If they have lived in WA State for less than 3 years, they will need to complete the National background check ($21 and Partner’s can reimburse if needed).  If they have moved here internationally, they will need to see me to provide a copy of their passport and entry visa or work visa (to then be approved at the SPS volunteer compliance office)
    3. ASM video (only needs to be watched once)
    4. Chaperone form (if chaperoning a field trip)
    5. Driver’s checklist form (if driving on a field trip)

All forms can be accessed here:

SPS has put a new volunteer policy in place for this year.  Volunteers are now cleared for 2 years.  So, if you filled out the online paperwork last year, you cleared to volunteer this year.  However, if you plan on chaperoning a field trip, you will still need to complete the Chaperone form and the Driver’s Check List form (if driving).

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, Teachers will generally start scheduling that the beginning of October.  In the meantime, there are a number of pressing volunteer needs, such as helping in the lunchroom. Please go to to view the volunteer opportunities available.

You will be able buy tickets early to avoid the lines Sept. 23-26th on the playground.

    Auction Meeting

The annual John Hay Spring Auction is scheduled on March 14, 2020 at Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center. Planning is starting now.  We will be hosting our first Auction meeting on Friday, Oct. 4th at 8am in the staff lounge.  If you are interested in being a part of the planning committee, we invite you to join us. Immediately after school our annual John Hay Day Carnival will begin! Beat the ticket lines and purchase tickets in advance on the playground after school September 23-26. Credit cards and cash accepted.

This carnival needs MANY volunteers. Jobs are in shifts so you are not committed for the entire event. This is a great way to get involved and meet new families. Please sign up here for a spot in set up, food service, run a game, provide baked goods, or clean up. Lots to choose from!

    John Hay Day:

The volunteer list is combined for Jaguar Jog and John Hay Day, so scroll through until you find the job that’s right for you. Thank you!
