Dear John Hay Elementary School Families,

I am writing to introduce myself. Starting July 1st, I will be your principal. I’m so excited to work with all of you to continue the journey of being an outstanding elementary school. I share your vision of a world class school in which children will develop and achieve the skills to be successful academically and emotionally, so that they can be culturally competent leaders in their school and home communities. Now more than ever, this is important.

I also want to acknowledge that this has been an unusual and difficult time for all of us because we haven’t been able to physically be with our school communities since March. In addition, we have experienced hardships regarding racial violence in our local and national communities. I know that these times have been challenging and we will come together as a school community to work through those challenges and help our students reconnect to classroom learning and interaction with peers. You and your family are not alone in this, we will come together and support one another. My goal is to help you feel safe and supported as we heal and learn what fall learning will look like.

To share a little about myself, I taught elementary school for 20 years in Seattle Public Schools. I am passionate that students should be proud of who they are and where they come from. I have two daughters who have attended Seattle public schools (one is a sophomore at Western Washington University, and one is entering 9th grade at Roosevelt high school) and my family is bilingual in English and Spanish. For the last three years, I’ve been the interim and assistant principal at Daniel Bagley Elementary School and have enjoyed my work in school leadership.

I am excited to partner with staff, students and families to realize the vision of John Hay Elementary. I believe that we should work together because we all know different aspects of a child’s educational experience. I value each one of you and am looking forward to hearing what you love about John Hay and what direction you want us to go in. I have an open- door policy and am interested in sitting down with you to listen to your experiences and ideas for this amazing school community. I am looking forward to our collaboration in providing a safe and nurturing environment as well as a rigorous and diverse curriculum.

Please know that I will work hard to ensure that all of you have the best possible experience during the upcoming school year.  Once again, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to join your wonderful community.

    Sincerely,

    Nicole Silver
