    This week's letter from Administration
    Posted on 05/18/2020

    Hello families!
I hope your week has gone well and you and your children have been able to enjoy the sunshine we’ve had. This time of year we always ask for input on your child’s learning style and individual needs that will help inform classroom placements for the coming year. Because we are away from the building, this will be done in email form this year.

We do not ask for, nor can we honor specific teacher requests. We value parent input, and will use this when balancing classrooms. Student placement is taken very seriously and is initiated according to a process involving time and careful thought concerning the best interest of every child in every classroom. In order to create balanced classes of students, the following factors will be considered; gender, ethnicity/diversity, academic ability, special needs, friendships, learning styles, grade level balance, behavior, and parent involvement.

If you would like to provide input, please respond to the following prompts in email form no later than Monday, June 1st. Send them to both Tami and Angela at trbeach@seattleschools.org and amclement@seattleschools.org .

    1. Characteristics of your child’s learning style, and learning environments that have proven successful. (i.e.: Quiet & organized classroom, or busy & exciting classroom)
    2. List any social or friendship issues you feel are relevant for consideration. (This is a good place to let us know your thoughts about placing twins together or apart, as well as one or two close friends that support your child in positive ways.)
    3. Other important information that will be helpful to know when placing your child in next year’s classroom.
As always, I am happy to answer questions in email or on the phone.

Thank you so much for taking the time to appreciate our fantastic staff last week. If you haven’t yet, you can still post a card or picture to our Facebook or Instagram pages for them to see on our John Hay Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

I would like to personally thank all the staff that are supporting student deliveries each week. Over the past two months they have delivered 160 hearty bags of food, 60 tech devices, and 150 SPS work packets. Thanks to them our families can continue to feel like a supported part of our community and help their children with continuous learning.

I would also like to share my appreciation to all those that donated to the Queen Anne Book Company fundraiser. We have raised over $1,400 for our students and Viewlands Elementary students that are very deserving of paper books.

Lastly, be on the look out for an invitation from Room Parents. We will be hosting Grade-level Town Hall Meetings. We’ll have a brief agenda and give time for parents to chime in with questions or ideas. Please send an email to amclement@seattleschools.org if you have suggestions for our agenda.

Looking forward to gathering with you at our Town Hall Meetings.
