    Jump Start: Preparing for Kindergarten

Jump Start will take place August 17-18, 2021

Please note check with your student's school for confirmation of dates and times.

The transition to school is a big step in your child's life. It’s natural to have some anxiety.   That's why, even before school officially starts, we want to begin a connection with your family. This can happen in many ways - through virtual school tours and open houses, by talking with families who are part of that school community, or by visiting the school playground.

Jump Start is the most well-known kindergarten transition program Seattle Public Schools offers. This week-long orientation to school serves as a kind of "day camp" for children to come to their new school, meet staff and peers, and practice kindergarten routines. For more information, please see translated Jump Start flyers on our Resources page (Amharic, Chinese, English, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tigrigna, Vietnamese.)

Because it is a summer program, not all schools participate. If you have registered and know your kindergartner's assigned school, please contact the school office to ask if they have committed to offer Jump Start or an alternative transition experience.

Health and safety is our top priority.  Jump Start planning is underway, but we do not know whether it will take place in person remotely. Please check this page for periodic updates.

    Summer break

    • From July 1 through August 9, schools will be closed for summer, with most staff off-line from late June through early August.
    • From mid July through early August, the SPS Admissions department closes to update its databases for the coming school year. New registrations are not accepted during this 2-3 week period.

Students with disabilities or health concerns

    • If your child has a disability we would like to work with you and your child's case manager in advance to design a Jump Start plan. Please call the school principal or Special Education Liaison teacher.
    • If your child needs medicine or nursing help during the school day please complete a Medication at School form (found on our health services forms webpage) and send it to your child's school as soon as possible so the school nurse can write a health plan to keep your child safe and health at school.
