2023-24 Welcome Letter from Principal Morisco
Principal Welcome Letter
Greetings John Hay Families,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year. I am honored to serve as your new principal and look forward to working with all stakeholders focusing on serving our students’ needs. The entire John Hay staff is excited to get back to working with our students. As a community school we are here for you, so please feel free to reach out to us when you have questions, needs, concerns, or celebrations.
See below for some updates and please let us know if your child is not attending John Hay this year.
Not Attending John Hay in 2023-24?
To withdraw your student’s registration for the 2023-2024 school year, please submit the Not Attending Next Year (NANY) form.
You will receive an email from your child’s teacher on Thursday, August 31 at 3 p.m.
First Day of School & New Start Time
The first day of school for grades 1-5 is Wednesday, September 6.
Kindergarten students will begin on Monday, September 11.
Students can arrive at school and have breakfast or be on the playground as early as 8:35 a.m. School begins at 8:55 a.m. and dismissal from the playground (or bus service) is at 3:25 p.m.
Each student will receive a John Hay red folder that will go back and forth all year. We will send home first day packets with important forms and information in this folder.
Students should receive notice of bus assignments from the district about one week before school starts. If your childcare address has changed, please let us know in the office so we can notify transportation.

- 2-3 p.m. Welcome Back Classroom Drop-in: Students and families can come to John Hay to visit the school and see their classrooms.
- 6 p.m. Back to School Information Session on Teams. Dr. Morisco will share some of our goals for the year and answer questions about safety and 1st day logistics.

School Supply Fee on School Pay
Instead of families having to buy supplies individually, we request that every family pay a $50 fee for school supplies. This enables the school to buy all the supplies students will need in the classroom. Extra donations are very much appreciated because not all families can pay this fee. If paying the fee presents a hardship for your family, please only pay what you are able. If needed scholarships are available; please let us know.
It would be great for each child to also have a backpack and water bottle. Your child’s teacher will let you know if they are in need of tissues or sanitizing wipes. Please label your student’s belongings.
If you haven’t already, please set up your Source Account. The Source is where you can see your child’s progress report, absences and pay supply and field trip fees. Students will have this account throughout their Seattle Schools career.
School lunch is no longer free for all of our students. You can either load money into an account on PayPams, www.paypams.com or you can apply for free/reduced lunch through this free/reduced lunch application.
SPS reduced meals webpage with information on income levels to qualify. When students qualify, it helps with our school’s funding, so please fill it out even if you think you may not qualify.
Report Absences/Late Arrivals/Pick Up Changes
Please report all absences, planned or not, to the main office:
That was a lot of information. Please reach out if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing all of you soon, and to the start of a fantastic 2023-2024 school year!
Dr. Jerid Morisco, Principal
